Front Page to cease

Microsoft discontinued their web site creation product Front Page as of the 2003 edition, and has end-of-lifed the product as of 2006. Three more years have passed, and the product must now be considered a security risk as no work is being done on it.

WebNameHost has never recommended Front Page but we did install the extensions that allow sites created with it to be used on our servers.

However, we will be removing these extensions from our servers before the end of 2009 (sooner if a specific problem emerges).

Features used in FrontPage websites such as form processing, themes, hit counters and website publishing from the program will all come to an end on our Unix systems.

If you have used Front Page in the past, you could still create your site with it, but not using these features, and publish it using an FTP program. Alternately, you could switch to another web creation program on your home machine.

We continue to recommend however, that sites be created using a text editor and written directly using HTML, and for more sophisticated designers, CSS. All site design programs have a limited lifespan and are potentially non-portable to other systems.

Could you move to another host and still use Front Page? No, almost none still have it, and if they did, their server is potentially insecure.

If you created your site on our system using Front Page, you must take action soon to re-cast it in another mode, or it will cease to function. Sorry about that, but such is life on the web.
