What is a domain name?

A domain name tells people (and the computers they use) how to find your homepage on the Internet. Each domain name is assigned to a numerical IP address by your host provider. People remember names better than numbers, so the domain name, e.g.. www.yourname.com, is automatically translated by the registry into the numerical address of the actual server.
